2 new Pinot Noirs from Daniel Fries – Rising Star of the Mosel

Daniel Fries (pronounced Free-s. We’re not in McDonalds) is an up and coming winemaker based in Winningen, in the Mosel Valley, where his family have been growing grapes and producing wine for generations.

After studying at Geisenheim he went on to work at Domaine Montille in Meursault and Lingua Franca in Oregon. He returned to work at the family estate and released his first wines under his own label in vintage 2019. Employing spontaneous fermentations, long lees contact, and minimal intervention, Fries crafts wines that are both classically rooted and vibrantly modern, offering a pure and authentic expression of one of Germany’s most challenging and rewarding winegrowing landscapes.

We’re delighted to be able to offer small quantities of the following 2 wines;

Daniel Fries Pinot Noir Vom Schiefer 2023 £25.00

This is grown on slate soils surrounding the village of Winningen. It’s hand harvested and naturally fermented in old oak vats, followed by 10 months of ageing in used barriques.This is a silky and delicate Pinot with red fruit, strawberry, cedar and wild herbs.

Daniel Fries Pinot Noir Terrassen 2022 £35.00

This comes from the oldest Pinot Noir terraces, cultivated and harvested entirely by hand and fermented naturally with 30% whole clusters in open top vats, followed by 16 months in barriques, 20% of which are new. This is loaded with raspberry fruit with floral highlights and has an elegant and silky texture. This has just been highly scored by Decanter magazine and was one of the highest rated wines of the tasting, out scoring many prestigious and more expensive wines.
