Henschke 2022 Single Vineyard Releases
Three Remarkable Wines from a Landmark Vintage
“The cooler vintage that was 2022 has birthed a tranche of wines of great delicacy and freshness. They are wonderful wines – I like the vintage so much.”
— Erin Larkin, The Wine Advocate
The 2022 single vineyard releases from Henschke arrive with a sense of occasion. Widely regarded as one of the estate’s finest recent vintages, 2022 combines elegance, purity and freshness with the depth and longevity for which Henschke is celebrated.
This year’s release is particularly significant as it marks 70 years of ‘Mount Edelstone’ Shiraz — one of Australia’s oldest consecutively produced single-vineyard wines and a cornerstone of the nation’s fine wine history.
The Henschke family have been making wine in the Eden Valley since 1868, with fifth-generation winemaker Stephen Henschke and viticulturist Prue Henschke continuing to elevate the estate through meticulous vineyard stewardship and an unwavering commitment to expressing vineyard character.
Prue Henschke’s work in the vineyards has been transformative. Through organic and biodynamic practices, careful soil management and the reintroduction of native vegetation, the Henschke vineyards have become a benchmark for sustainable Australian viticulture. The resulting wines are not simply powerful expressions of Australian terroir — they are increasingly refined, detailed and site-specific.
A Vintage “Graced by Belief”
Stephen Henschke describes 2022 as a vintage “graced by belief”. Severe spring hail in late October dramatically reduced yields across Eden Valley, yet a warm summer and timely January rainfall guided the vines through to a slow and even ripening period. Harvest took place around two weeks later than average, preserving freshness and aromatic detail throughout the wines.
The result is a collection defined not by weight or excess, but by precision, finesse and energy — qualities that have seen the wines receive immediate critical acclaim. We are pleased to offer our allocation from the latest release.
2022 Cyril Henschke Cabernet Sauvignon
Sourced from low-yielding Eden Valley vines planted in the 1960s, the 2022 release captures the cool nature of the vintage beautifully. Aromatically lifted and finely structured, it combines classic Cabernet perfume — cassis, blackcurrant leaf and cedar — with remarkable elegance and restraint.
Rather than sheer power, the wine offers precision and detail, with finely woven tannins and exceptional balance pointing towards a very long cellaring future. It is a striking example of how Eden Valley can produce Cabernet Sauvignon of both intensity and refinement.

“…I appreciate the varietal definition and delicacy here. The cooler vintage that was 2022 has birthed a tranche of wines of great delicacy and “fluffiness”/freshness. They are wonderful wines—I like the vintage so much.”

“…Thrilling, bright and with exceptional direction and clarity (or perhaps clarety), Cyril is akin to a stained-glass window, with light streaming through…”
2022 The Wheelwright Shiraz
Produced from old-vine Shiraz grown in the cooler Eden Valley, The Wheelwright has quickly established itself as one of Australia’s great modern Shiraz expressions. In 2022, the wine is especially captivating — intensely aromatic, savoury and beautifully composed.
There is an energy and tension to the wine that reflects the cooler season perfectly. Dark berry fruit, spice, florals and mineral notes unfold across a long, poised palate, supported by silky tannins and vibrant acidity. It is a Shiraz of sophistication rather than opulence, built for graceful ageing over decades.

“… This offers immense pleasure now, but it will, like all the Henschke wines, evolve positively in the cellar for decades to come. The 2022 vintage brings such delicacy and freshness to this wine. I love it.”
18.5 points, Matthew Jukes,MatthewJukes.com
“…The Wheelwright has quietly taken up a position as flag-waver for the mighty Shiraz-based wines from Henschke, and in 2022, it does a brilliant job!…This is the most complete vintage of this wine to date!”
2022 Mount Edelstone Shiraz
Drawn from the historic 16-hectare vineyard in Eden Valley, planted predominantly to ancient pre-phylloxera Shiraz vines, Mount Edelstone occupies a special place in Australian wine history. The original 1952 bottling was a pioneering single-vineyard wine at a time when such concepts were virtually unheard of in Australia.
The 2022 release is a fitting tribute to that legacy. Deeply perfumed yet finely detailed, it delivers layers of blackberry, plum, sage, spice and floral complexity with extraordinary elegance and composure.
What defines this vintage is its balance. The cooler conditions have brought exceptional freshness and clarity to the wine, while the old vines provide depth, texture and quiet power beneath the surface. It is unmistakably Mount Edelstone — profound, age-worthy and deeply expressive of place.

“…This is a beautiful wine, and one of the most lovely Mount Edelstone Vineyard Shirazes I have tasted on release…”
19+ points, Matthew Jukes,MatthewJukes.com
“The finish is as neat and ordered as any I have tasted, and given its youth and grandeur, this alone offers a fascinating insight into the extraordinary balance across the entire landscape of the palate.”
A Defining Vintage for Henschke

These are wines shaped not only by a remarkable vintage, but by generations of custodianship and an enduring belief in the importance of old vines, sustainable viticulture and authentic site expression.
For collectors, the 2022s will undoubtedly become highly sought-after cellar additions. For those fortunate enough to taste them young, they already offer a compelling glimpse into the future of Australian fine wine — one increasingly defined by elegance, freshness and precision.
